Celebrate Ramadan with a simple yet beautiful cake!
Make any dense chocolate cake recipe (check out the blog section for a roundup of chocolate cake recipes), place the printable template on top (download below), and dust some icing sugar through a sieve. Quick, easy, and festive!
The stardust cakes features the 8-pointed star, a common motif found in the Islamic medieval world. As I mentioned in a previous post, the 8 pointed star is a symbol of the 8 angels that flank Allah’s throne. Emma Clark in her book, The Art of the Islamic Garden, explains that when Prophet Muhammad embarked on his night journey he saw 8 angels flanking the Throne of Allah. She cites the Quran as well, which also states that on the Day of Judgement, 8 angels will be on the sides of the Throne (69:17). So because of these descriptions, Ibn Arabi, a 12th century mystic, drew an eight pointed star to represent Allah’s Throne in his famous cosmological diagram, “Plain of Assembly”.

You can print on your average computer paper – or for a reusable template, you can print it on a overhead projector transparency sheet (remember those? Talk about old school.) Once printed, carefully cut out all the white space using scissors or an x-acto knife. You will have a two piece template in the end: a large web-like star and a smaller star that you’ll place in the middle.
