In some Muslim cultures, lanterns are heavily associated with Ramadan. Before electricity, lanterns were carried outdoors to help spot the crescent moon which indicates the start of Ramadan. For a fun treat for kids, make lantern sandwiches with peanut butter and jam – the jam gives the lanterns a stained glass look!

Ingredients and Supplies

  • Bread
  • Peanut butter
  • Jam
  • Lantern cookie cutter

  1. Lightly toast bread. Use cookie cutter to cut out lantern shape on bread.
  2. On another piece of bread, spread a layer of peanut butter followed by a layer of jam.
  3. Place bread with lantern shape on top of peanut butter and jam bread to make a sandwich.

Tip: Use the cut out lantern pieces to make mini sandwiches.
