Ramadan is here! Ramadan Mubarak! To kick off the holy month, I’m sharing how to make Ramadan Drummer Favor Boxes. These work excellent with our Ramadan Drummer Banner and other Ramadan Drummer crafts for a festive kids party.
Who is the Ramadan Drummer?
If you’re not sure who the Ramadan Drummer is, you’ve come to the right place. Since 2016, Hello Holy Days! has been popularizing the Ramadan Drummer in North America as a fictional holiday character. Except – the tradition of the Ramadan Drummer really is real.
Ramadan Drummers are people who wake up the neighborhood before dawn to eat a meal. Eating before fasting makes the fast easier. It’s also a blessed time so before alarm clocks, a human alarm clock did the trick. Now a day, the tradition has faded out but we’re bringing it back for imaginative minds! For kids that love Santa, or other North American holiday characters, the Ramadan Drummer brings the same charm to Muslim kids celebrating Ramadan.
How to Make Ramadan Drummer Favor Boxes
You’ll love these Ramadan Drummer Favor Boxes because they’re made from readily available favor containers. At a children’s party, each child can decorate their own favor box. I imagine children ages 9-12 would be able to carry out this craft as is. But for younger children, you may want to adapt how the kids decorate the boxes. Maybe prepare the boxes ahead of time with the purple paper and then have kids decorate with with pre-cut triangle shapes or stickers. Your call depending on your knowledge of the children’s ages and abilities.

It’s nice that these drums come with an attached handle – perfect for kids to carry easily. Pair the drums with sticks used for making rock candy and little ones can drum to their hearts’ content! Inside, the drums are spacious enough to fill with healthy (or not so healthy) snacks and non-edible treats too like bubbles, cool shades or fun stickers.
You don’t have to limit this craft to children though. If you’re an adult who loves crafting for Ramadan, use these Ramadan Drummer Favor Boxes for gifting homemade cookies or other homemade treats like caramel popcorn! I think one of the greatest joys in Ramadan is making food to gift and share.
Materials
- 5″ DIY Clear Plastic Paint Bucket Party Favor Containers from Oriental Trading (comes as 6 pc set).
- 1 large sheet of purple construction paper (you want to look for poster size sheets at the dollar store or art supply store. Regular 8.5 x 11” or 12 x 12” sheets won’t cover the circumference of the container.)
- Yellow ribbon, 1/8” and ½”
- Gold ribbon (optional)
- Yellow paper (optional)
- Tassels (optional)
- Sticks for making rock candy, available in the candy making aisle of a craft store or Amazon
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Tailor’s awl or similar sharp, pointy object
Steps
1. Remove the handles from the favor containers.
2. Cut out strips of purple paper that cover the favor containers in height and circumference. Hot glue the paper onto the containers.
3. When you put the paper on the container, the holes on the container where the handle fits will now be covered from the outside. Use a tailor’s awl or similar sharp object to pierce through the paper from the inside to reveal the holes where the handle will go. Place the handles back on the containers.
4. With the 1/8” yellow ribbon and hot glue gun, make a zig zag pattern on the container to resemble a drum. Do this all the way around the drum.
5. Next use the ½” yellow ribbon and hot glue gun on the top and bottom of the drum for a finished look.
6. Fill the drums with treats of your choice and pair with two rock candy making sticks for beating! (Tip: If desired, use twine to tie the two sticks together and add a name tag for easy gifting.)
7. To make different variations of the drums, cut triangles from yellow paper and glue on – or use gold ribbon and a small gold tassel.
