DIY Ramadan Terrarium
Why Make A DIY Ramadan Terrarium?
As Ramadan approaches, many individuals seek meaningful ways to enhance their spiritual journey. One unique and artistic method is creating a DIY Ramadan terrarium that beautifully captures the essence of this sacred month.
There is something about gardening, whether outdoor gardening or indoor gardening, that is so humbling. Connecting with nature and life forms helps us connect with our Creator and Sustainer making this the perfect spiritual DIY for Ramadan.
Over a span of some 40 years, Ramadan can be experienced in all 4 seasons. In 2024, Ramadan happens to take place in the spring. This is why the Hello Holy Days! shop this year includes planters. There are so many potted plants in season during spring, such as tulips and hyacinths, to enhance the beauty of this special month. (Plus both of these flowering plants hold significance in some Muslim cultures, such as Turkish culture, making them all the more meaningful for the month.)
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps of making a stunning DIY Ramadan terrarium using our Mahvash planter—a crescent moon-shaped vessel designed to add a touch of elegance to your space.
In this tutorial, we show you how to use the Mahvash planter with succulents. But, you can also use floral foam and create a fresh flower arrangement with this planter, for example if you’re having a dinner event and you want a centrepiece for your table.
Helpful Tips for Making a DIY Ramadan Terrarium
The Mahvash planter doesn’t have any holes at the bottom so it’s important to choose plants that will not require very much water. If the water doesn’t have anywhere to drain, it can rot the roots of the plant causing it to die. One thing plant enthusiasts suggest when using a plant that will require a lot of water in a planter without holes is to line the bottom of the planter with pebbles. This way, the water has somewhere to drain.
The succulents we have chosen don’t require too much water making them perfect for this planter. The key to keeping them alive is really how much sunlight they receive. This planter is best situated on a windowsill where the succulents are sure to get enough sunlight – particularly if the window is east facing. The nice thing about these planters is that their feet are sized perfectly for sitting on a windowsill.

How to Make a DIY Ramadan Terrarium
Choose the Right Size Planter
Begin by choosing the size of Mahvash planter that suits your space. Its crescent moon shape symbolizes the lunar month of Ramadan, making it a perfect choice for this project. Ensure the planter is clean and dry before moving on to the next step. (Please note, in order for this planter to balance properly, it needs to have soil inside of it.)
Plant Succulents
Select small succulents or plants that thrive in terrarium environments. Carefully plant them in the Mahvash planter, creating a miniature oasis within the crescent moon shape. Be mindful of spacing and use potting soil to secure the plants in place. You can typically fit 2-3 succulents in the large size Mahvash planter and 1 succulent in the small size Mahvash planter.
Add Golden Decorative Pebbles
Enhance the visual appeal of your terrarium by incorporating decorative pebbles or stones. These not only provide a stable base for your plants but also contribute to the overall aesthetic. Consider adding miniature Ramadan-themed decorations, like tiny lanterns or stars, for a personalized touch.
Crafting a terrarium for Ramadan with our Mahvash planter is a delightful way to infuse your living space with tranquility and symbolism. Whether you choose to make this a solo project or involve your loved ones, the end result will be a stunning creation that not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also resonates with the spirit of Ramadan. Embrace the serenity of this month with the Mahvash planter, bringing a touch of elegance and mindfulness to your home.
Another great idea is to make this DIY Ramadan terrarium as a hostess gift if you’re invited to any iftar or Eid parties. Plants make a great gift for just about anybody but when combined with the Mahvash planter, they become a really special memento celebrating Ramadan and Eid al Fitr.
