Since lanterns are also a big part of Ramadan, here’s a simple DIY for taking store bought lanterns and transforming them into lanterns just for Ramadan! These will look fantastic displayed outdoors on your porch or even indoors on a console table. Here I’ve opted for the greeting “Ramadan Mubarak” using Martha Stewart Craft stencils but if you’re making these for Eid you can stencil your lanterns with “Eid Mubarak”. You can also stencil simple shapes onto the lanterns such as a crescent, stars or a mosque using homemade stencils made from contact paper.
Materials
- Golden geometric glass lantern from HomeSense
- Martha Stewart Crafts alphabet stencils
- Purple multipurpose or glass paint
- Foam brush
- Scissors
- Scrap piece of paper
- Masking tape
Steps
- From the alphabet stencil sheets, cut the correct letters needed to form the phrase “Ramadan Mubarak”.
- On a scrap piece of paper, figure out how you will space each letter. This will help you see how wide your word is going to be. Mark how wide and how tall your word is going to be on the piece of paper and cut out the piece of paper
- Position the piece of paper where you’d like your word to be on the lantern. Tape it to the backside of the glass using masking tape.
- Now you’re ready to begin stencilling! Adhere your stencils to the front of the glass making sure to align with the paper you have taped to the back. Stencil each letter using purple paint and a foam brush.
- Wash your stencil immediately after each use and be sure to wait 2-3 minutes between stencilling letters so the paint can dry. You may find it easy to stencil one letter on the word “Ramadan” and then one letter on the word “Mubarak”. Then when you go back to stencil your second letter on the word “Ramadan”, the first letter will have dried and so on.
- Once you’ve stencilled your whole phrase, stencil in some decorative stars all around the lantern. Let paint dry. If desired, add a clear coating to the lantern to prevent paint from being chipped off. Display.
